Movable pool floor
A movable pool floor is a clever, advanced mechanical system that makes it possible to change the water depth smoothly, or even to close off the pool basin completely. As a result, a single pool can adapt to a wide range of needs – one moment it is a safe paddling pool, the next it becomes a full-size swimming lane.
When we think of a modern villa, we often picture a beautiful terrace that slides down at the push of a button to reveal a hidden pool. Aesthetically, it hits the mark. We gain extra space to use freely, which is especially handy on cooler days when we would not be swimming anyway.
It is also a huge plus for safety – a closed pool means that no unattended child or pet can accidentally fall into the water. But is this technology reserved for millionaires? It turns out it is not, and a movable floor has many more practical uses that are rarely talked about.
How does a movable pool floor work?
The whole thing relies on very robust mechanisms – most often advanced actuators or hydraulic systems working beneath the water surface. Importantly, such structures must meet strict safety standards (including the European standard EN 13451-11), which sets out precise requirements for movable floors and bulkheads.
Depending on what you need, the system usually works in one of two ways:
- The entire pool floor is lowered and raised evenly to the set level.
- Only a designated zone moves, which makes it possible to create areas of different depths within one pool (e.g. a shallow part for exercise and a deep part for swimming).
1. The entire pool floor moves
2. A designated zone moves
What are the benefits of a movable pool floor?
The main benefits of a movable pool floor are, above all, maximum versatility, full accessibility without architectural barriers and the highest level of safety. Instead of building several different basins, we get one universal facility that changes its purpose smoothly in a matter of moments. It allows wheelchair users to enter with dignity, gives peace of mind about children's safety and, once fully closed, gives us back the entire recovered floor space.
What is a movable pool floor used for? Practical applications
The greatest strength of a movable floor is its flexibility. We can adjust the depth on the fly to suit whoever is getting into the water:
- We lock the floor at a depth of, say, 40 cm and that's it. Children can play safely, and adults need not worry that a little one will suddenly lose their footing.
- We bring the floor level with the surrounding deck, and a wheelchair user can roll straight onto the platform, which then descends into the water very slowly and smoothly. No more awkward and often stressful pool hoists.
- Changing the depth makes it possible to turn a deep sports pool into a shallow zone in no time. This makes it easier to adjust how deeply the body is immersed to specific needs, such as resistance exercises, water walking, or relaxation and rehabilitation sessions.
- Psychological support – this solution is a great help for people who are afraid of deep water or are just learning to swim. Being able to enter water that comes only up to the knees or waist makes it easier to take the first step and gradually build confidence.
- Flexible space – when the pool is brought level with the floor, we regain fully usable floor space.
When is a movable pool floor worth choosing?
- You are designing a public building and want the highest accessibility standards.
- The pool is to serve very different groups (from toddlers and active swimmers to older people).
- You have limited space and versatility matters to you.
- You want the maximum level of safety (e.g. at rehabilitation centres).
Pools with movable floors in Poland – examples
- Wodny Park Tychy – this facility has a special sports zone with a movable-floor pool. The depth can be adjusted between 30 cm and 1.8 metres, depending on the needs of the group using the water.
- AQUA Toruń – this modern complex offers, in its pool area, a special basin for swimming lessons and water gymnastics. The movable floor system allows the depth to be changed from zero to as much as 3.5 metres.
- Aquapark „Zduńska Woda” in Zduńska Wola – it has a pool with adjustable depth (usually set to 1.2 metres, with the option of increasing it to 1.6 m).
- Szkoła Podstawowa Integracyjna nr 144 (Integrated Primary School No. 144, os. Bohaterów Września 13, Kraków) – one of the newest facilities of this kind, opened in 2024 as part of a municipal programme. A movable floor was installed to make it easier for children to learn to swim and for people needing rehabilitation to use the pool.

FAQ – frequently asked questions
What is a movable pool floor?
A movable pool floor is an advanced mechanical and hydraulic system that allows the water depth in a pool to be adjusted smoothly, or the pool to be closed off completely.
Is a movable floor safe?
Yes, these mechanisms are extremely safe. They must meet strict standards (including EN 13451-11). The platform moves slowly, and the gaps between the floor and the basin walls are minimal, which prevents entrapment.
How does a movable floor help with rehabilitation?
The system allows the floor to be brought level with the surrounding deck (“zero” level), enabling a wheelchair user to enter the water directly and with dignity. This removes the need for traditional pool hoists and makes it easy to adjust the depth to specific exercises.
