Vortals are one of the most numerous types of websites. A vortal specialises in publishing information on a narrowly defined subject. A vortal may be aimed at a specific group, for example athletes, musicians, cooks or motoring enthusiasts. According to Wikipedia, “the name was meant to contrast with an ordinary portal covering a wide range of topics (a horizontal one), and at the same time to emphasise the higher quality of the resources provided, but it did not catch on widely”. A vortal offers specific content, which is why an ever-growing number of users make use of its resources. An important feature of this type of website is interactivity. A vortal has a number of components that enable members of a given interest group to exchange experiences and opinions. Like portals, vortals also make their space available for advertising – with the difference that the adverts are closely related to the subject of the website. Most vortals also have their own domain. The page layout, colour scheme and graphic design are immediately associated with its subject.
