Social networking sites are a type of web portal co-created by a group of people with similar interests or views. They consist of instant messengers, forums and mailing lists. The essence of social networking sites is interaction between users. This takes the form of, among other things, building friends lists, sending private messages between users and the smooth flow of information, which happens mainly through discussion forums, blogs and chat pages.
Social networking sites
Social networking sites originated in the United States. It was there, at the beginning of the 21st century, that the first such sites were created: friendster.com and tribe.net, which were hugely successful. A breakthrough in their development was the launch of Myspace.com. Today's largest social networking site, facebook.com, was modelled on it. In Poland, the most popular social networking site is Nasza-Klasa (now NK), while the first Polish portal of this kind was Grono.net, launched
in 2003.
The main advantages of social networking portals include:
- The ability to create a user profile containing personal details.
- The ability to search for people with a user profile and add them to your friends list.
- The ability to create and share photo and video galleries.
- The ability to keep an online diary.
Apart from the features listed above, there are others that give individual sites their own character. As for access to these social networking portals, most of them allow you to register an account for free. However, it is possible to extend its functionality, for which a fee is charged. This model is used above all by dating sites.
