One of the main factors affecting how high phrases rank in search engines is website loading time. The shorter this time, the more likely it is that the website will rank higher than others that take much longer to load. In this article we explain how to speed up your website.

What affects website loading speed?

The main factors are:

  • The server – its specifications and location are key here. The shorter the server response time, the better.

  • The CMS the website was built with. A website written in pure HTML, without PHP scripts (i.e. scripts executed on the server side), will always load the fastest. The CMS itself matters less than the number of additional plugins installed. They can certainly extend the website's functionality considerably, but at the cost of server load, which in turn affects loading time.

  • Website content. Websites consist mainly of text and images. While text does not weigh a page down much, images certainly do. The larger the image file, the more certain it is that the page will load more slowly.

How can you reduce page loading time?

Start by carrying out an audit using the free PageSpeed Insights tool.

The tool will check the key elements of the website as well as the server settings that should be optimised.

After the check, you will get a detailed description of what needs to be done to make the website load faster.

The tool's most useful feature is that it prepares optimised files for you, which you simply swap for the ones currently on your website. This step alone can increase your website's speed score several times over! Now you know how to speed up your website.
