What are the signs that a website has been infected?

Infected website warning message

Viruses on a website most often redirect visitors to a different address. There may be phishing attempts and, shortly afterwards, the site may be added to a so-called "blacklist". The result is not only a drop in search rankings but also a warning that the site has been infected and is dangerous. In that case it is usually impossible to access the site, because clicking the link brings up a browser warning about the danger to the user.

How does a website get infected?

The most common cause of virus problems on a website is not keeping software and plugins up to date. In WordPress, for example, software "updates" appear all the time. Their purpose is usually to patch holes and improve security. If these vulnerabilities are not fixed, they are exploited by malicious software written specifically to take advantage of them. We therefore always recommend not only updating plugins but also using only reliable sources from trusted suppliers.

Sometimes the cause is insufficient security on the server, in which case malware can spread from other locations belonging to other customers. In that situation, the most reliable protection is to change servers quickly.

What should you do if you have already fallen victim to malware?

If you know you have fallen victim to such malicious software, there is no need to panic. Most likely nobody singled you out; a vulnerability in the software was simply attacked, and several thousand websites around the world, for example those using the same plugin, have the same problem. Act quickly: if you are not yet blacklisted and your site is not being shown as dangerous, restore it from a backup. Then update all plugins.

If you have no backup, your site has been blacklisted or the problem has come back, it is best to hand the matter over to a company that deals with such cases. Why? If you lack experience, outsourcing the work ensures that you will not lose data and that the situation will not happen again.

Why entrust virus removal and website security to us?

We have extensive experience: we have built over 200 websites, which we currently consider secure. Several of our clients first came to us with exactly this problem (e.g. http://sp9.edu.pl/ http://hydrografpolski.pl/). In such cases we act very quickly and aim to remove all traces of the virus, both in the files (sometimes viruses destroy the entire structure, because they write themselves into every file on the server) and on blacklists, within two days. We carry out an audit and remove unnecessary elements that could be dangerous (e.g. outdated plugins). We also secure the site on several levels, which ensures security for many years. In addition, we use our own proprietary safeguards, meaning that breaking them would require many hours of reverse engineering.

THE COST OF THE VIRUS REMOVAL SERVICE is approx. PLN 600–1,000 net (this covers all of the work described above)

We also offer a move to more secure hosting.
