What is the Helium network?

The Helium network is a decentralised, global, long-range LoRaWAN wireless network. The term LoRaWAN is explained in the article "What is LoRaWAN" . It can provide coverage for IoT devices. The network consists of hotspots and antennas whose purpose is to provide network coverage. Here is the official Helium website.

What is IoT

IoT stands for the Internet of Things. It is a network of connected devices that can communicate with each other and share data with users over the internet. These include devices such as temperature sensors, barometers, pet microchips, and trackers for vehicles or, for example, rental e-scooters. There are more and more such devices in the world, and operating them requires a good network connection. This is exactly the kind of network Helium is building.

How does Helium work?

In addition, the Helium network is linked to the cryptocurrency Helium (HNT). Participating in the network, i.e. building hotspots, is rewarded with Helium cryptocurrency. Helium also uses one of the newest work algorithms, “Proof of Coverage”, which means that cryptocurrency is earned not only for work performed but also for providing coverage over an area.

What do you earn Helium for?

Helium cryptocurrency can be earned in several ways. For example:

  • For relaying data from IoT devices. The more such devices are within range of your hotspot, the more you can earn.

  • For checking whether other hotspots within range of yours are working. The more hotspots there are within range of yours, the more you can earn.
