What is alternative text?

Alternative text allows blind people to read the content of images. The alternative text is read out by screen readers. Without alternative text, a blind person would hear, for example, company_logo.png or, even worse, Screenshot_5795498. Alternative text is aimed mainly at blind people who cannot see the graphics on the page. Alternative text should be short – no more than 250 characters. Remember that a blind person should also be able to at least imagine what the graphic shows, so make an effort to keep the description as detailed as possible. At the same time, bear in mind that this person has to listen to all of that information, which takes up their time.

How do you add alternative text in WordPress?

Adding alternative text in WordPress is very simple: just click on the image you want to add it to. Then click the pencil icon “Edit”. The “Image details” window will open. In the “Alternative Text” field, simply type a text describing the image, and finally click the update button – that's it.

How do you add alternative text to documents?

Just as with WordPress, adding alternative text in Microsoft Word and in Google Docs is equally simple. In Word, you need to click on the image in question, then in the top right-hand corner select the “Alt Text” tab – if you cannot see it, click the three dots. Now simply fill in the title and description of the alternative text and you are done.

In Google Docs, simply right-click on the image and then select the “Alt text” option. Then, just as in Word, fill in the title and description of the alternative text and finally click the OK button – that's it.
