What is LoRaWAN?
LoRaWAN stands for Long Range Wide Area Network. It uses open-source technology. Designed with the Internet of Things (IoT) in mind, LoRaWAN technology offers a much greater range than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections.
What is the difference between LoRa and LoRaWAN?
The difference between LoRa and LoRaWAN is significant. Unlike LoRaWAN, LoRa is a proprietary technology owned by the chip manufacturer “Semtech”. It uses Chirp Spread Spectrum technology, which converts radio frequencies into bits so that they can be carried across the network. LoRaWAN uses LoRa, but refers specifically to the network and the way data transmissions flow through it.
What is the range of LoRaWAN?
LoRaWAN performs well both indoors and in open spaces, although this depends on the location. It uses frequencies below 1 GHz and a very narrow frequency band, which provides good coverage and indoor penetration. To use LoRaWAN, the area of interest must be covered by gateways so that devices, sensors and the like can connect, but we do not have to build our own network: we can use one of several existing networks, one of the most popular being the Helium network, which also has its own cryptocurrency, Helium.
